A 10-year-old boy who fell into a borewell in Madhya Pradesh's Guna district has been rescued after the 15-hour-long operation, according to authorities. The child has been rushed to the hospital but is said to be unconscious.

The child, identified as Sumit Meena, fell into the borewell on his family farm around 3 pm on Saturday. He was trapped at a depth of around 39 feet. The borewell was dug a year ago but remained open.

His family realised that he fell into the borewell only after some time. They alerted the police and the rescue operation was undertaken by Raghogarh SDM Vikas Kumar Anand. The rescue team began excavating near the borewell to try and reach the child. A 22-foot pit was dug parallel to the borewell for the rescue operations. Oxygen was immediately supplied to Sumit.

However, rescue operations were hindered as night fell. Visibility issues caused by extreme fog almost haltered the work.

He was finally rescued on Sunday morning. Guna ASP Man Singh Thakur told ANI that Sumit had been rushed to the hospital. "Sumit fell into the borewell yesterday afternoon at around 3:30 pm. The rescue operation to take him out began at around 6 pm. Today morning at around 9:30 am, he was taken out of the borewell. He has been taken to the hospital, his breathing is slow. He is unconscious right now," Thakur added.

Rajasthan girl still trapped

The three-year-old girl child, who fell into a borewell in Rajasthan's Kiratpura continues to remain trapped inside. The child, identified as Chetna, fell into the borewell on December 23.

Footage released by ANI showed rescuers continuing the operation to drill a parallel tunnel on Sunday too, almost a week since the child got stuck inside the borewell.

The operation involves digging an eight-foot-long and 170-foot tunnel at 90 degrees adjacent to the borewell. However, the rescue operations had to be halted multiple times due to sudden changes in weather and light rain, especially on Thursday.

The plan is to dig a pit and weld the casing pipe. After this, NDRF personnel will be lowered into the pit in shifts in an attempt to reach the girl.
