One of the deceased was identified as Debendra Nayak, who was the BJP mandal president in Goshala. The other person was a former sarpanch, Muralidhar Chhuria. The car was travelling from Bhubaneswar to Kardola. The collision happened at 1.30 am on NH 53 in Burli. Besides the driver, there were six people in the car.
BJP worker Suresh Chanda, who was in the car, claimed that the truck driver "deliberately" rammed their vehicle. He said the truck rear-ended their car twice initially. After fearing that the truck was ramming their car on purpose, the driver diverted from the national highway and drove into a rural road near Kantapalli Square.
Following this, the truck chased the car and rammed it, overturning it, Chanda said. He recalled that he lost consciousness after the car turned turtle. "Why would someone be hit thrice from behind?" he wondered.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Mukesh Kumar Bhamoo said they will probe the allegations levelled by the deceased's family and the survivors. Police have seized the truck and arrested the driver.
