Congress MLA I.C. Balakrishnan was named in the suicide note of the late Wayanad District Congress Committee Treasurer N.M. Vijayan. The note, released by Vijayan’s family, alleges that Balakrishnan took bribes for appointments at the Congress-controlled cooperative bank in Sultan Bathery.
Vijayan and his son Jijesh were found at home in critical condition after consuming poison last month. They later died at the Government Medical College Hospital in Kozhikode, during the last week of December.
The irregularities in the bank appointments were brought into the public eye following the suicide, and a document surfaced stating that 30 lakh rupees had been taken from the father of a job applicant for a bank appointment. The document was signed by N.M. Vijayan, but the name of I.C. Balakrishnan also appeared in the contract.
Balakrishnan then filed a complaint with the Wayanad District Police Chief, alleging that the documents were “fake.”
As protests demanding the MLA’s resignation mounted from the CPI(M), the Congress leadership rallied behind him. However, a letter sent by Vijayan to the KPCC President has also surfaced now.
In his four-page suicide note, Vijayan writes about his financial liabilities and how they fell on his shoulders. Besides Balakrishnan’s name, the Wayanad DCC President N.D. Appachan’s name is also mentioned in the letter.
The letter to the KPCC president states that money was taken from several individuals in the name of appointments, and that this money was intended for Balakrishnan. It also mentions that, in the end, no one cared about Vijayan, and all the responsibilities were placed on him.
In his suicide note, Vijayan accuses that his son was removed from the bank job so Balakrishnan could place someone of his own choosing in the position. The note also claims that the Congress legal cell was aware of these irregularities. Vijayan further laments that he wasted his life working for the Congress.
