Six persons, including three women, died while several others were injured in a stampede at the Lord Venkateswara Swamy temple in Tirupati on Wednesday night.

The incident occurred near the Vishnu Nivasam where hundreds of devotees jostled for tickets for the Vaikunta Dwara Darshanam.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed ‘deep shock’ over the incident and ordered officials to take relief measures to ensure that the injured get better treatment.

Naidu said that he was deeply disturbed by the loss of four lives in the incident that took place when devotees had gathered in large numbers for tokens, according to a statement issued by the chief minister’s office.

“The CM is keeping abreast of the current situation by speaking to district and Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) officials from time to time,” it said.

Naidu will visit Tirupati on Thursday morning and meet those injured.

Hundreds of devotees have turned up at the temple from across the country for the 10-day Vaikunta Dwara Darshanam commencing from January 10.
