A third-year engineering student studying at IIT-Kharagpur was found dead on campus premises on Monday. The incident comes days after a staff was found hanging in the staff quarters within the premises.
The deceased student was identified as Shaon Malik, a third-year student studying electrical engineering at IIT-Kharagpur. Malik was found hanging inside his room by his parents when they came to visit him on Sunday. According to campus authorities, Malik’s parents and institution staff had to forcibly open the door of the hostel room after he did not respond to repeated calls.
In a statement, IIT-Kharagpur said, "With a sense of utter shock, the students, staff and faculty members deeply mourn the sudden loss of Shaon Malik, a third-year student from the Department of Electrical Engineering. He was found dead in Azad Hall of Residence premises on the morning of January 12."
"Upon discovery of the incident, the campus security and medical teams were immediately alerted... The police are conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Malik's death. The institute is fully cooperating with the authorities," it said. West Bengal police have registered a case of unnatural death and have begun a probe.

Authorities described Malik as a bright student and academically gifted. "He was known for his intelligence, dedication and promising future in the field of electrical engineering,” it added.
College officials said Malik had spoken to his parents over phone the previous night and things seemed perfectly normal. IIT-Kharagpur announced they will conduct an internal probe into the matter. Authorities also advised students to make use of counselling and mental health resources available at the campus.
A few days ago, Nasir Ali Mollah, a junior technician at IIT-Kharagpur, was found hanging in his room in the staff quarters. IIT authorities said they are extending all support for the investigation.
