Special intelligence inputs received by Delhi Police suggest that operatives of a pro-Khalistani outfit are targetting former Delhi Chief Minister and AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal, said a report. Following the intel, a security review of Kejriwal was undertaken by the Delhi Police.
Intelligence inputs suggested that operatives of a pro-Khalistan outfit would try to assassinate the Delhi Chief Minister, according to The Times of India.
A hit squad comprising two to three men, who were last spotted in Punjab, were planning to target Kejriwal and the operatives could already be on their way to Delhi. The intel also suggested that Pakistan's ISI is behind the plot, which is aimed at disturbing the law and order situation in both Delhi and Punjab, the report added.
However, the intel is said to be "human intelligence" and the authorities are investigating it. The development comes amid the Delhi Assembly elections which are slated to be held next month.
At present, Kejriwal gets a Z-Plus security cover. This provides him with 63 security staff, which include a pilot, escort, close protection team, home guard, spotter, besides search-and-frisking staff. While 47 people are included in this security system, the rest are uniformed personnel of the Central Armed Police Force.
In 2014, the Intelligence Bureau had warned that the life of Kejriwal was under threat from the Indian Mujahideen terror group. The IB alerted the Delhi Police that the Mujahideen group may kidnap Kejriwal to secure the release of convicted Indian Islamist terrorist Yasin Bhatkal.
Following this, the Delhi Police officials met Kejriwal to brief him. However, he objected to the ‘leak’ of information to the media. He added that by making the news public, the Delhi police were putting his life in jeopardy. "Haven’t police made me vulnerable? Now anyone can attack and it would be said that Bhatkal’s men did it. Is Delhi Police so foolish or are they playing politics?," Kejriwal lashed out.
