Opposition in Maharashtra slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government over the life-threatening attack on Bollywood actor Saif Al Khan and questioned the law and order situation in Mumbai. The opposition charged the attack was a deliberate attempt to undermine Mumbai.

Highlighting recent incidents, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi said the attack on Saif raises questions about Mumbai police and the home minister. “What a shame that Mumbai sees another high profile attempt on life, the attack on Saif Ali Khan yet again raises questions on Mumbai Police & the Home Minister,” the Maharashtra MP said in a post on X.

The Uddhav Sena leader said the attack happened in an area with adequate security. Chaturvedi added, “...a series of incidents that show there is a deliberate attempt to undermine Mumbai by targeting big names: Baba Siddique ji’s family is still awaiting justice after his shocking murder; Salman Khan forced to live in a bullet-proof house; Now it is Saif Ali Khan; all in Bandra. An area which has the highest concentration of celebrities, which is supposed to have adequate security. If celebrities are not safe then who in Mumbai is? Wishing Saif Ali Khan a speedy recovery.”

Clyde Crasto, national spokesperson of Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party charged there is no fear of law in Mumbai due to leniencies in the recent past. “Attack on Saif Ali Khan is a cause for concern because if such high profile people with levels of security can be attacked in their homes, then what could happen to common citizens? Fear of law seems to be at a low in Maharashtra due to leniencies in the past couple of years,” Crasto alleged on X.

NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule also expressed concern over the attack and termed the incident “worrisome”. Sule, who is also a close friend of the family said the actor is recovering and safe in hospital.

In a statement, actor and wife of Saif, Kareen Kapoor Khan, said, “There was an attempted burglary in Saif Ali Khan and (his wife and actor) Kareena Kapoor Khan's residence last night. Saif had an injury on his arm for which he is in hospital, undergoing a procedure. The rest of the family is doing fine. We request the media and fans to be patient and not speculate any further as the police is already doing their due investigations. Thank you all for your concern.”

Saif Ali Khan was attacked during the early hours of Thursday, around 2.30am, by an intruder who allegedly barged into the actor’s residence at the Satguru Sharan building. The actor suffered six stab wounds, out of which two are deep; one is said to be near his spine.
