Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday upbraided the alleged attempts to brand Mumbai as an unsafe city in the wake of the knife attack on actor Saif Ali Khan.

“I think Mumbai is the safest among mega cities in the country,” Fadnavis said. "It is true that some incidents take place sometimes, and they must be taken seriously. But to say that Mumbai is unsafe due to such incidents is not right".

The chief minister, who also holds the home portfolio, assured that the government would take every step to make the city safer.

He was talking to the media after attending a special screening of Emergency directed by Kangana Ranaut.

Khan was stabbed in the wee hours of Thursday by an unidentified person at his house in Mumbai’s Bandra area. Police have formed ten teams to investigate the incident while the actor is recuperating at the Lilavati Hospital.

Doctors successfully conducted a surgery to remove a 2.5-inch piece of knife from the actor’s spine.

"We wish to inform you that fortunately Saif Ali Khan's surgery has been done very well. He is on the recovery path. He has been shifted to the ICU. Maybe in a day or two he will be shifted to the ward," said Lilavati Hospital's Chief Operating Officer (COO) Dr Niraj Uttamani.

The opposition Congress and the Shiv Sena (UBT) targeted the government over the law and order situation.

“What a shame that Mumbai sees another high profile attempt on life, the attack on Saif Ali Khan yet again raises questions on Mumbai Police & the Home Minister,” Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi wrote on X.

Congress state president Nana Patole demanded the resignation of Fadnavis as the home minister.
