Sanjay Roy, the man convicted of raping and murdering a resident doctor at the R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata reacted bizarrely to the judge's pronouncement to the verdict convicting him, claiming he was innocent.
Justice Anirban Das, additional district and sessions judge, pronounced Roy guilty in 12 minutes after the court convened on Saturday. " The charge against you is that you entered the RG Kar Hospital in the early hours of August 9. After roaming around there, you attacked a female doctor. You sexually assaulted her before killing her. In the charge sheet, you have been charged under sections 64, 66, 103(1) of the Indian Penal Code. The witnesses who have been examined and the evidence provided by the CBI lawyers prove your guilt. You have been found guilty," the judge said.
On hearing the verdict, Roy started shouting to the judge that he was innocent. He added: "I am being framed. I have a Rudraksha garland around my neck. If I had committed the crime, the garland would have broken," he told the judge. "I am being framed completely. Sir, do you understand that I am being framed?" he repeated.
However, the judge said all witnesses had been examined and based on the evidence, he had been found guilty. "The way you carried out the crime can lead to life imprisonment or death sentence. I will hear from you and your lawyer on Monday. I will tell you what the punishment is on Monday," the judge added.
Even after this, Roy kept pleading 'sir' 'sir' with folded hands. "You have convicted me. I am poor. I did not do this. Why are those who did this being released?" he shouted. Roy was forcibly taken out of the court after this.

The CCTV footage released by the Kolkata Police did not show any Rudraksha garland on his neck when he committed the crime. Roy was seen wearing a Bluetooth headphone around his neck when he entered the seminar hall, which was missing when he came out after committing the crime. The police recovered this from the crime scene.
Amartya De, the lawyer for the victim's family, said the topic of Rudraksha mala was never raised before. "It was not confiscated from the scene or even after the arrest. If it was so important, it should have been informed earlier," the lawyer added.
