With the Delhi elections around the corner, the political battle is heating up with AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal taking a strong stance against the BJP's manifesto and the latter asserting its commitment to the development agenda. The debate over free education, healthcare, and essential subsidies is making voters question the future of welfare schemes in the capital as both parties roll out their plans.
Aam Aadmi Party supremo and Delhi’s former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, in a press conference, referred to the BJP’s sankalp patra, accusing the party of planning to dismantle the free education, healthcare and subsidies in the capital.

“BJP has clearly stated it will stop free education being provided to 18 lakh children in Delhi”, he claimed.
Kejriwal highlighted the financial strain this would add on households as it would mean an average of an additional Rs 15,000 per month strain on a household to sustain themselves in Delhi. He also warned voters that the BJP might end initiatives such as free electricity, free bus rides, and mohalla clinics urging them to exercise caution ahead of the elections.

The BJP, on the other hand, assured citizens that it will continue existing welfare measures while eliminating corruption in governance. The party emphasised its plans to introduce the Ayushman Bharat Yojana providing wider coverage of healthcare to the common man. It claimed that its focus is more on development rather than distributing freebies.
Free electricity, healthcare, better and free education, and free bus rides for women have been the highlights of the AAP governance model in the Capital. With the BJP now promising to retain and better the schemes in its manifesto, the battle between the AAP and BJP is turning out to be of which party can capture the imagination of the people faster. Is it freebies or development or both, the outcome of the upcoming elections will decide who could convince the voters better, before they face the real challenge of delivering on the promises.
