As Mumbai Police ascertain the identity of the Bangladeshi man accused of stabbing actor Saif Ali Khan at his Bandra residence, the attacker's family has alleged that the man caught on CCTV camera sneaking into the actor's house was not his son.
Police said the accused Mohammad Shariful Islam was an illegal immigrant from Bangladesh. They also recovered a Bangladeshi driving license and other documents were found from Shariful, which proved he was a Bangladeshi citizen. The licence says Shariful is a resident of the Barisal Sadar area of Bangladesh and was born on March 12, 1994. His father's name is Mohammad Ruhul Amin.
Meanwhile, Shariful's father Mohammad Ruhul Amin acknowledged that the arrested man was his son but denied his involvement in the crime. Ruhul Amin told ABP Ananda over the phone that the man on the CCTV camera was not his son.
"The person seen on the CCTV is not my son. I saw the picture captured on CCTV. The person seen in the footage has long hair that covers his eyes. That is not my son. His face is also different. Your country India is huge and many people have similar faces. Even in a small province of Bangladesh, many people look the same. Many have confused me with others. There is a huge difference between the person seen on the camera and my son," Ruhul Amin added.
The father said Shariful left Bangladesh and came to India after the political unrest in the country and had been employed. Shariful was a supporter of Khaleda Zia and had been threatened by Awami League after Hasina returned to power last year, the father claimed. He added that he used to hear from his son every month after he received his salary. Though he was first staying in West Bengal, Shariful moved to Mumbai in search of better prospects. He added that Fakir hadn't received any communication from the police.
Despite his claim, police said Shariful has not been in contact with his family for a long time.
Meanwhile, the accused is said to have requested the police to deport him to Bangladesh, stating that he only meant to steal money and not harm the actor. Shariful said he lost his job on December 15 and was facing financial problems. He stated he planned to rob the actor's house before returning back to Bangladesh.
