Possibly the first death due to Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) in Maharashtra, a man suspected to have contracted the disease has died in Solapur district. According to authorities, over 100 GBS cases have been reported in Pune.
The native of Solapur, is suspected to have contracted the disease while he visited Pune recently. An official told PTI the patient died in Solapur, however, the official did not divulge further details. “The total number of GBS cases in Pune on Sunday increased to 101, comprising 68 males and 33 females. Of these, 16 patients are on ventilator support. One suspected death has been reported in Solapur," a state health department official told PTI.
A Rapid Response Team (RRT) and the Pune Municipal Corporation's health department are conducting door-to-door surveillance in the affected Sinhgad Road areas. According to officials, a total of 25,578 houses have been surveyed so far—15,761 in the Pune Municipal Corporation limits, 3,719 in Chinchwad Municipal Corporation limits, and 6,098 houses in the district's rural areas.

According to experts, GBS is a rare condition that causes sudden numbness and muscle weakness, with symptoms including severe weakness in the limbs, loose motions etc. According to health experts, bacterial and viral infections generally cause GBS and they weaken the immunity of patients.
According to state authorities, 19 new cases were suspected on Sunday. As per a bulletin released by the state health department on Sunday, there were nine patients aged between 60 and 80 years.
