Uniform Civil Code is a tool to put an end to all discriminatory practices against women, regardless of their religion, said Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami releasing the notification for UCC. He also launched the website for mandatory registration of marriages, divorce and live-in relationships as per UCC.

Launching the website, Dhami expressed gratitude to the people of Uttarakhand and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. "I express gratitude to the people of Uttarakhand and thank PM Modi as we fulfil the promise we had made. Today, post-independence, Uttarakhand has become the first state in the country to implement Uniform Civil Code.” Dhami added January 27 will be celebrated as UCC Diwas every year.

Dhami added, “The UCC, creating equal laws for every citizen across all religions, comes fully into effect at this moment. The credit for it goes entirely to the people of the state,” PTI reported.

The chief minister added under UCC, registration for live-in relationships is mandatory. “The registrar will give the information of the couple to their parents, this information will be kept completely confidential,” he said.

According to officials, under UCC, marriages that have taken place since March 26, 2010, will have to be registered within the next six months from the implementation of the Code. Marriages that have taken place after the implementation of the Code will have to be registered within 60 days from the date of marriage.

The implementation of UCC is a major fulfilment of pre-poll promise by the Bharatiya Janata Party. Soon after the 2022 Uttarakhand Assembly polls, the state cabinet decided to form an expert committee to draft rules for the implementation of UCC in the state.
