The accused in the Pune bus rape case, Dattatray Ramdas Gade, allegedly attempted to kill himself twice before getting arrested during the early hours of Friday. A Pune court granted police 12-day custody of the accused.

As per reports, Gade, a history-sheeter, attempted to kill himself twice while he was hiding to evade arrest by police. Gade was arrested from sugarcane fields in his native village in Shirur. Drones, sniffer dogs and 13 police teams were deployed to nab the accused. According to police, on arrest,  a ligature mark was found on the accused's neck, suggesting he attempted to kill himself by hanging.

The accused observed police movement in the village by hiding in a farm. “He was discreetly observing police presence in the village. Scared with police action, he attempted suicide by hanging himself from a dry tree in a field, but the rope was broken and his attempt was in vain,” a senior police official told PTI.

Gade was nabbed after he approached a family in the village later on Thursday night for water. Reportedly, the villager, who recognised Gade, was the brother of a police personnel and immediately alerted him. Special teams resumed the search which was halted by then and nabbed Gade.

Meanwhile, professor Ganesh Gavhane from Gunat, who played a key role in the arrest according to police, was found with a bottle of insecticide when he was arrested. According to Gavhane, Gade was found near a cricket ground in the village and started running away when he spotted the villagers. They managed to nab Gade and he reportedly pleaded to be allowed to talk to his son before being handed over to police. “He had a bottle of insecticide in his hand which I quickly snatched from him and alerted the police who later took him into custody,” Hindustan Times reported quoting Gavhane.

Gade, a history-sheeter with half a dozen criminal cases against him, fled to his native village place in Shirur after allegedly sexually assaulting a 26-year-old woman inside a stationary Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation bus at Swargate in Pune on Tuesday. Gade has been remanded to police custody till March 12.
