Congress took a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, accusing him of deliberately avoiding a visit to Manipur despite the tense situation in the northeastern state for over a year. The opposition has been demanding the prime minister to visit Manipur ever since ethnic violence broke out.

Criticising Modi, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh tweeted, “It is Frequent Flier time and the PM is off to Mauritius now. But even after President's Rule has been imposed in Manipur the situation remains tense.” Ramesh added the prime minister is insulting the people of Manipur by delaying his visit. “The people of Manipur continue to wait for a visit by the PM. His refusal to do so for almost two years is really an insult to them,” he said.

Manipur is under President’s Rule now, after Bharatiya Janata Party leader N. Biren Singh resigned from the chief minister’s post in early February. Recently, Union Home Minister Amit Shah conducted a review of the security situation in the state and ordered security forces to ensure free movement of vehicles on all routes from March 8. Over 200 people have died in the ethnic clash between Meitei and Kuki groups since May 2023.

Meanwhile, the Lok Sabha will conduct an hour-long discussion on the statutory resolution seeking approval of the proclamation of President's Rule in Manipur on Tuesday. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Manipur budget in the house for discussion.
