The Ministry of External Affairs welcomed the ceasefire and hostage deal between Israel and Hamas that will see a pause in the 15-month-long war in Gaza.

"We welcome the announcement of the agreement for the release of hostages and a ceasefire in Gaza," the ministry stated.

The Indian government expressed hope that the ceasefire will allow supply of humanitarian aid to Gaza.

The Centre reiterated its continued stance on solving the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy, leading to the release of hostages and a ceasefire.

Besides Israel and Hamas, mediating nations the US, Egypt and Qatar confirmed the truce deal. The ceasefire agreement will come to effect on January 19, when the release of hostages will begin, said Qatar Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani.

The initial phase will last for 42 days, during which IDF will withdraw troops from Gaza. At total of 33 women, children, the elderly and the sick will be released by Hamas in exchange of 1,000 Palestinian security prisoners.

Three hostages will be released on Sunday while four more will be returned on the seventh day. Following this, three hostages will be released every seven days. The remaining 14 will reach Israel in the final week.

At least 65 more hostages would still be in Hamas captivity and they would be released once the two sides agree on the second phase.
