Over a billion hopes and dreams will be pinned on a 1,471kg lander carrying a 27kg robot, as ISRO reaches the penultimate stage of its Chandrayaan 2 mission after 48 days and lands a rover near the moon’s south pole.

The soft landing of the Vikram lander is considered the most challenging part of the mission, with only the United States, Russia and China having achieved it in the past.

Between 1am and 2am, the Vikram lander is scheduled for a powered-descent, with touchdown expected between 1.30am and 2.30am Indian Standard Time. After Vikram has landed, the rover Pragyan will deploy between 5.30am and 6.30am.

If you are planning on staying up to watch the moment, here is where you can catch the livestream.

ISRO’s website livestream

ISRO will start streaming the mission on its website at 01:10 IST here.

You can also watch the stream on ISRO’s Facebook page and Twitter handle. Keep an eye on social media handles as during the Mangalyaan mission, ISRO made a separate verified Twitter account for its orbiter, which posted photos as it circled the red planet.

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) will start their livestream on YouTube at 01:10am — you will be able to watch it here.

Where will it happen

ISRO states that the landing site is the “high plain between two craters, Manzinus C and Simpellius N, at a latitude of about 70.9 degrees South 22.7 degrees East.” In case this site does not work out, an alternate site is 6.7 degrees South and 18.4 degrees West.

The Chinese Chang’e mission, which was the first to soft land on the far side of the moon, is located 45.9 degrees South and 177.6 degrees East.
