Indian wrestler Sushil Kumar claimed the gold medal in the men's 74kg category of the 21st Commonwealth Games.
With this, India's medal tally in Commonwealth Games rose to 29—14 gold, six silver and nine bronze.
Sushil defended his crown in the men's 74 kg category which he had won at the 2014 edition of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Sushil overpowered Johannes Botha of South Africa by technical superiority in the final to win the top honours. Bouts are awarded on the basis of technical superiority when one wrestler takes a lead of 10 or more points.
Botha was no match for Sushil, who pulled off a four-point move in the opening seconds of the first round.
Sushil then executed a series of two-point moves which gave him a 10-0 lead and the gold.
Earlier, Rahul Aware opened India's gold account in wrestling after defeating Canada's Steven takahashi in the final. This was Aware's first Commonwealth Games medal.
Rahul executed the 'fitlay' move against Takahashi, giving him an eight-point lead.
Babita Phogat won a silver in the 53kg women's wrestling category. Babita, who claimed a silver in the 2010 edition of the Commonwealth Games before a gold in Glasgow, failed to break through Canada's Diana Weiker's defences, going down 2-5 in the contest.
