South Africa captain Faf du Plessis won the toss and elected to field against England in the opening match of the World Cup at the Oval on Thursday.

Currently, England is batting at 159 for the loss of three wickets. The hosts had lost opener Jonathan Bairstow in the second ball of the game after his bat nudged the outside edge off a delivery from IPL star Imran Tahir on the way through to wicket keeper Quinton de Kock for a duck.

England quickly recovered from the initial shock as opener Jason Roy and Joe Root put up a century stand amassing 106 runs. The partnership came to an end as Roy was caught off a Phehlukwayo ball by Faf du Plessis in deep-set mid-off. Soon, Root followed Roy as he was caught out by J.P. Duminy off a Rabada ball.

Root scored 51 off 59 balls, while Roy got 54 off 53 deliveries. Currently, skipper Eoin Morgan (28*) and Ben Stokes (14*) are on crease for England.

England, the world's top-ranked one-day international side and the tournament favourites, included fast bowler Liam Plunkett in a line-up captained by Eoin Morgan, with Tom Curran missing out on his Surrey home ground.

South Africa omitted allrounder Chris Morris, with Dwayne Pretorius selected.
