Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes secured a record-extending 87th pole position of his career and fourth of the season on Saturday in qualifying at the German Grand Prix in Hockenheim.
Hamilton, the defending five-time world champion, clocked a best lap in one minute and 11.767. His teammate Valtteri Bottas was third ahead of Pierre Gasly in the Red Bull.
Ferrari faced a double disaster after Charles Leclerc, who had been fastest for the Italian team in final practice, failed to run in the Q3 top-10 shootout due to a fuel systems problem. He will now start at 10th position. His teammate Sebastian Vettel was unable to take part in qualifying due to a turbo problem and will start at the back of the grid for his home race.
Kimi Raikkonen was fifth for Alfa Romeo ahead of Romain Grosjean of Haas, Carlos Sainz of McLaren, Sergio Perez of Racing Point and Nico Hulkenberg of Renault.
The German Grand Prix, the 11th race of the 2019 Formula One season, will begin at 6.40pm IST.
