Manchester City drew 2-2 at home to Tottenham Hotspur after the VAR ruling on a late goal from Gabriel Jesus sparked a row on Saturday.

The Brazilian scored the winner in added time but the VAR review had spotted a handball by City defender Aymeric Laporte before Jesus struck home.

Raheem Sterling's header after Kevin De Bruyne swung in a cross from the right gave City the lead in the 20th minute. However, Erik Lamela equalised for Tottenham three minutes later to add pressure on the Premier League champions.

Pep Guardiola's side got back into the game after Sergio Aguero turned the low ball from De Bruyne and restored their lead in the 35th minute. The Spurs continued their fightback as Mauricio Pochettino sent in Lucas Moura, who found the net in the 56th minute.

The levelled score kept both teams on edge until Jesus scored in added time, only to be ruled out by VAR. City manager Guardiola said that there were several inconsistencies in the use of VAR. He pointed out that a Spurs foul on Rodrigo was ignored. “VAR in that moment was taking a coffee,” he said.

“It's deja vu,” said Guardiola. City were knocked out of the Champions League in April to the Spurs when they had a late goal ruled out by VAR.

Spurs captain Hugo Lloris said he felt they lost the game when Jesus scored. He said that it was a great finish from Jesus, but “VAR is part of football now”.
