Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov recorded a shock upset at the US Open on Tuesday as he defeated legend Roger Federer in a five-set match, lasting over three hours, in the quarterfinal.

Dimitrov, who is ranked no.78, had Federer struggling for much of the match, and eventually won 3-6, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Ironically, Dimitrov had never won against Federer in their previous seven matches and had come into the US Open with losses in seven of his last eight matches.

Dimitrov maintained control at the baseline and kept Federer from finding his rhythm. Dimitrov is now the lowest-ranked player to reach a Grand Slam semifinal since Rainer Schuettler did it at Wimbledon in 2008, when he was ranked No 94.

The exit of Federer is the second major upset at the US Open this week, after defending champion Novak Djokovic had to retire hurt in his fourth-round match, owing to a shoulder injury. The no. 2 seed, Rafael Nadal, will play Diego Schwartzman of Argentina on Wednesday night (US time) in the last quarterfinal.
