Bianca Andreescu, 19-year-old teen from Canada, downed Serena Williams 6-3, 7-5 in the US Open finals to win her first Grand Slam. In the process, she denied Williams her record-tying 24th Grand Slam win. The 19-year-old Andreescu, just the second women's Grand Slam finalist from Canada after Eugenie Bouchard at Wimbledon in 2014, had become the first teen Grand Slam champion since Maria Sharapova won at Flushing Meadows in 2006.

Andreescu, in her US Open main draw debut, saved a set point in the opening set against fellow first-time Grand Slam semi-finalist Bencic, the 13th seed from Switzerland, before edging the tie-break. She trailed by a double break at 5-2 in the second set but reeled off the final five games to set up a rematch of last month's Toronto final against the 37-year-old Williams, who retired from that clash with a back injury.
In 2018, the 23-time grand slam champion Williams, who was set to equal Margaret Court's record of 24 grand slam titles, lost the final 6-2, 6-4 to Naomi Osaka.
Before the match, Patrick Mouratoglou, Williams' coach, had touted Saturday's US Open final opponent Bianca Andreescu as a future world number one in women's tennis.
Mouratoglou said he had full respect for the 19-year-old Andreescu.
"I said before the tournament, I had been asked who are my two underdogs, and I said Bianca and [Daniil] Medvedev. So, I am not surprised she's there," Mouratoglou said Friday.
"I expected her in final, and I think she's going to be number one soon. Not too soon but in the future, because she has everything that's needed to be number one."
