Former Indian cricket captain and current BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly, who was rushed to the Woodlands Hospital in Kolkata on Saturday, had suffered a mild heart attack, sources in the hospital told THE WEEK. The veteran cricketer fainted after his workout this morning. Ganguly has regained consciousness and is stated to be stable and out of danger.

His brother Snehasish and wife Dona are at the hospital. Ganguly has undergone cardiography and other tests at the hospital. His ECG report suggested that he had a cardiac arrest in the morning. However, his blood pressure and other vital parameters are normal.

"When he came to the hospital at 1pm, his pulse was 70/min, BP 130/80 mm of Hg and other clinical parameters were within normal limits. His ECG showed hyper acute ST segment elevation in inferior leads and lateral leads. Echo showed mild inferior wall hypokynaesia with preserved overall left ventricular function. He is stable haemodynamically. He has received loading doses of dual anti platelets and statin and is undergoing primary angioplasty now," Dr Rupali Basu, MD & CEO of Woodlands stated in a press release.

A board of five doctors has been formed to treat him. An angiogram was done after which multiple blockages were found in his heart. Sources said an angioplasty would be carried out soon. Saroj Mandol, head of the medical board, said Ganguly suffered myocardial infarction for which treatment is going on. Ganguly has been admitted to the CCU of the hospital, he added.

Sources at the hospital said Ganguly had three blocked arteries in his heart. A stent has been inserted in one artery that was 90 per cent blocked. The other two arteries, having around 70 per cent blockages, would be taken care of later, the sources added.

The sources also indicated that it might be a case of Ischemic heart disease, a condition of recurring chest pain or discomfort that occurs when a part of the heart does not receive enough blood. It is to be noted that Ganguly has a family history of the Ischemic heart disease.

A detailed press bulletin is awaited at 5pm.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has advised Ganguly's family to shift him to AIIMS, Delhi.

Soon after the news of Ganguly's hospitalisation, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee tweeted that Ganguly suffered a "mild cardiac arrest" and wished him a speedy recovery. "Sad to hear that @SGanguly99 suffered a mild cardiac arrest and has been admitted to hospital. Wishing him a speedy and full recovery. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family!" she tweeted.

Family sources said he was constantly on medical supervision and had undertaken more than a dozen COVID tests in the past on account of IPL and other work commitments for the BCCI. He was also under stress for the past several months due to work pressure.

Speculations were also rife about his possible political entry with the BJP. Shah had recently met him in Delhi. Ganguly also went to the Raj Bhavan recently to meet West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar, following which speculations of his joining the BJP has been gaining ground.

Meanwhile, Ashok Bhattacharjee, a former minister with the Left government, visited him at his house and requested him not to join politics. Ganguly used to be very close to former chief ministers Jyoti Basu and Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.
