Abhimanyu Mishra made history today by becoming the youngest chess grandmaster, breaking the record of 12 years and seven months set by Sergey Karjakin in 2002.
Mishra reached the milestone in 12 years, four months, and 25 days. The 12-year-old player from New Jersey scored his third GM norm in Budapest, having already crossed the required 2500 Elo rating barrier.

He had picked up two GM norms earlier. He was on his way to his third GM norm after starting with 5/6, but lost in round seven to the Slovak GM Milan Pacher. Mishra, however, bounced back with a win against the Hungarian FM Bence Leszko.
He went on to defeat Indian GM Leon Luke Mendonca, 15, with the black pieces, "securing a performance rating higher than 2600 over nine rounds, which constitutes a GM norm".
Earlier, he had broken the record of R. Praggnanandhaa, who held the title of the youngest international master in history, at 10 years, 10 months and 19 days. Mishra won the title in November 2019 at 10 years, 9 months and 20 days.
Mishra had also broken the United States Chess Federation record for youngest Expert by earning a 2000 USCF rating at 7 years, 6 months, and 22 days, breaking the record of Awonder Liang.
