World number one tennis player Ashleigh Barty won the final of the Australian Open women’s singles event to become the first Aussie in 44 years to win a Grand Slam at home.
Barty beat 27th seed Danielle Collins from the USA in straight sets 6-3, 7-6 (7-2).
It was a fairly easy win for the 25-year-old, for whom it is a third Grand Slam trophy. Her previous titles were at the 2019 French Open and the 2021 Wimbledon. Barty also has a doubles title at the US Open.

For Collins, the run to the final takes her to the top-10 of the women’s rankings for the first time in her career.
After Barty took the first set 6-3, she was down 1-5 in the second set before she rallied to force the set into a tiebreak. In the tiebreak, she dominated and raced to 5-1 before clinching the match 7-2.
Barty wins the title without losing a single set throughout the tournament.
Barty was the first Australian woman into the singles final of the Australian Open since Wendy Turnbull in 1980 and is now the first Australian champion since Chris O'Neil in 1978.
