Wrestler Sushil Kumar, who is serving time in Tihar jail for his involvement in the Sagar Dhankar murder case, is reportedly giving fitness and wrestling coaching to fellow prisoners, according to the director-general of prisons.
The two-time Olympics medallist is training eight inmates in the prison complex, reported news agency ANI.
According to Hindustan Times, Kumar was earlier only exercising recreationally with a few others including former JNU student Umar Khalid.
The classes he takes now are part of the prison’s extra-curricular activities after he requested the jail superintendent to permit him to start a fitness centre. The sessions are being done without any equipment, but are using objects like bricks and buckets of water as substitutes for weights, a source told HT.
Prison officials usually allow inmates to take part in such extra-curricular activities to prevent them from going into depression. Kumar is also taking theory classes for them on the importance of maintaining fitness.
The 38-year-old wrestler was arrested on May 23 and has been lodged in jail since June 2, 2021.
Kumar, along with others, allegedly assaulted former junior national wrestling champion Sagar Dhankar and his friends at the stadium in May over an alleged property dispute. Dhankar succumbed to the injuries later.
