India vs Australia: BCCI confirms end of 4-match Test series for Border-Gavaskar Trophy

Since 2003 the Border-Gavaskar Trophy has been a 4-match Test series

As India and Australia brace up for the upcoming Test series, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed the end of the traditional four-Test series as part of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

The All-India Senior Selection Committee of the BCCI also announced on Friday the 17-member squad for the forthcoming Boder-Gavaskar series.

The series is set to begin on February 9 in Nagpur. It will be the team's final contest in the ongoing World Test Championship cycle.

"This will also be the last edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy which will be a 4-match Test series feature," read the statement from BCCI.

According to reports, talks have been going on for a long time to change the series from a four-match contest to five Tests series.

Since 2003-2004, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy has been a four-Test series since India had toured Australia, with the 2010/11 contest only being a two-Test contest. The last time a series featured five Tests was in 1991/92.

Earlier last year in August,  ICC had released the Men's FTP cycle for 2023-27, which includes two sets of five-match series for the Border-Gavasakar Trophy in the upcoming ICC World Test Championship cycles. According to the FTP, Australia will host India for the first five-match Border-Gavaskar series in 2023-25 of the WTC cycle, followed by a reciprocal tour in the 2025-27 cycle.

For the series, Ishan Kishan has been called up as Rishabh Pant's replacement with K.S. Bharat as the first-choice wicketkeeper. Jasprit Bumrah will be absent series.
