Bas de Leede, 23, arrived at the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 as the golden boy of Dutch cricket. The bowling all-rounder was in decent form in the tournament so far but bowled a miserable spell on Wednesday. He now holds an unwanted record -- the bowler to concede the most runs in an ODI game.

Facing five-time champions Australia in New Delhi's Arun Jaitley Stadium, Bas de Leede leaked an astonishing 115 runs in his 10 overs -- the highest ever in the format.

Glenn Maxwell, who made 106 runs in 44 balls, punished Bas de Leede the most as he hammered the youngster for 28 runs in the last over of the latter's spell. De Leede had earlier claimed the wickets of Marnus Labuschangne and Josh Inglis, but Maxwell's brutal hitting wiped the medium-pace bowler clean of all happiness towards the end of the innings.

The 23rd over of the game also turned cathartic for Bas de Leede. After Smith plundered him for a six and four, David Warner too pulled him for a boundary before Roelof van der Merwe produced a stunning catch -- only to be denied after reviews showed he had grassed the ball.

Bowlers to leak most runs in ODIs

Interestingly, the record for delivering the most expensive ODI spell was held by two Australians till Wednesday. Michael Llewellyn Lewis of Australia conceded 113 runs from his quota of 10 overs against South Africa in Johannesburg on March 12, 2006. The record was matched by his countryman Adam Zampa against the same opposition 17 years later in Centurion, the ESPN CricInfo showed. The leggie was bashed around the park on September 15, 2023, by the Proteas batters.

After the two Australians came Wahab Riaz (Pakistan) and Rashid Khan (Afghanistan). They leaked 110 runs in 10 overs against England in 2016 and 2019 respectively.

Glenn Maxwell creates history with fastest World Cup ton

Glenn Maxwell struck the fastest century of the ODI World Cup to power Australia to 399-8 in 50 overs. Maxwell (106 off 44) blew away the Dutch attack to score his century off just 40 balls, bettering the record of South Africa's Aiden Markram, who had smashed 106 off 49 balls against Sri Lanka at the same ground here on October 7.

Maxwell hit nine fours and eight sixes during his whirlwind knock.
