Indian captain Rohit Sharma continued his sublime ICC World Cup form on Sunday as the home team clashed with bottom-placed Netherlands in Bengaluru on Sunday. Rohit Sharma slammed 61 runs from 54 balls before being dismissed by Bas de Leede to give India a flying start at the batting-friendly Chinnaswamy track.
The Indian captain, known for his big shots, also broke two cricket records during his stay in the middle. Rohit Sharma smashed two maximums against the Netherlands to become the batter to hit the most sixes in a calendar year. India's "Hitman" was at par with AB de Villiers's tally of 58 sixes from 2015 at the beginning of the innings.
There are no active cricketers in the top-five to challenge Rohit's tally of 60 as things stand, and the right-hander is likely to add a few more to the list in the knock-out stage of the World Cup.
Most ODI Sixes in a Calendar Year:
2023: Rohit Sharma (IND) 60*
2015: AB de Villiers (SA) 58
2019: Chris Gayle (WI) 56
2002: Shahid Afridi (PAK) 48
2023: Muhammad Waseem (UAE) 47*
2017: Rohit Sharma (IND) 46
2011: Shane Watson (AUS) 42
However, the match witnessed Rohit Sharma breaking a second six-hitting record. Having blasted 24 sixes in the tournament so far, he surpassed Eoin Morgan's tally of 22 from the 2019 edition to become a skipper to hit the most sixes in a single edition of the tournament.
Earlier, Rohit decided to bat first after winning the toss against the Dutch. Rohit's opening partner Shubman Gill made 51 off 32 balls, while Virat Kohli was dismissed for 51 off 66.
