The countdown to the 2024 Paris Olympics began last year with the qualification process. Paris 2024, as the 2024 Summer Olympics is referred to, is scheduled to take place from July 26 to August 11, 2024.

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics saw a record number of 124 athletes from India winning seven medals, including Neeraj Chopra’s historic gold in the men’s javelin throw. It was India’s biggest medal haul in an Olympics.

India is sending more athletes this time around and is hopeful of a better haul.

Countries have quotas at the Games, and an athlete may secure it through direct qualification (based on performances at designated competitions during the qualification period) or via world rankings.

The NOC (National Olympic Committee) of each country has exclusive authority for their representation at the Olympics, which means the athletes’ participation depends on the country's NOC.

India’s first quota place for the Paris Olympics 2024 was filled by trap shooter Bhowneesh Mendiratta, and the first Indians who qualified for track-and-field events were race walkers Priyanka Goswami and Akshdeep Singh. The Indian men’s hockey team, which won the bronze in 2020 Tokyo Olympics, has already been qualified for the Paris Olympics.
