Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh on Friday refuted reports that he may contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, saying that his “passion lies in supporting and helping people in various capacities”.
Times of India had earlier reported that Yuvraj Singh will contest on a BJP ticket from Punjab's Gurdaspur seat. His recent meeting with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari had led to speculations of him going to join the saffron party soon.
"Contrary to media reports, I'm not contesting elections from Gurdaspur. My passion lies in supporting and helping people in various capacities, and I will continue to do so through my foundation @YOUWECAN," the 42-year-old said on X late on Friday.
"Let's continue making a difference together to the best of our abilities," he said.
Actor Sunny Deol is the incumbent MP from Gurdaspur. Yesteryear cine great Vinod Khanna, too, has represented Gurdaspur in the past. A few days ago, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had hit out at Deol over his "absence" from the constituency and reminded him that politics meant serving and being available to the people round the clock.
Deol's alleged absence had contributed to speculations that the BJP will look for a fresh celebrity face to represent Gurdaspur.
Yuvraj Singh is one of India's most celebrated cricketers, with the Man of the Series award in India's victorious campaign in the 2011 ODI World Cup being the highlight of his storied career. He scored 362 runs and took 15 wickets in the tournament.
