As Sunrisers Hyderabad piled misery on Hardik Pandya's Mumbai Indians on Wednesday, it was particularly hard on Kwena Maphaka. On his IPL debut, the 17-year-old South Africa pacer leaked 66 runs from his allotted four overs.
South Africa's U-19 World Cup hero, Maphaka, was punished for 22 runs in his second over by a brutal Travis Head as SRH went on to make 277/3, the highest total in IPL history.
But was the teenager's spell (4.0-0-66-0-16.50) the most costly in the history of the IPL? Records books say no. In fact, the spell didn't even make it to the top five. Interestingly, the record for the most expensive spell in the history of the tournament is held by an SRH bowler. Basil Thampi, playing against RCB at the Chinnaswamy on May 17, 2016, was punished for 70 runs in 4 overs. Yash Dayal and Ishant Sharma are in the second and third spots respectively.
