Rajasthan Royals all-rounder Rovman Powell, who is set to captain West Indies in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024, had a brilliant day in the field against RCB at Ahmedabad on Wednesday. Even as his teammates struggled to hold on to balls, Powell took as many as four catches in the IPL Eliminator.
Batting first, Royal Challengers Bengaluru managed 172/8 in their 20 overs. Four of the eight dismissed batters saw their innings ending in the safe hands of the big-hitting Powell, who dived to the front and walked backwards to complete the catches. Among his victims were the RCB captain Faf du Plessis (17 of 140, Cameron Green (27 off 21), Mahipal Lomror (32 off 17) and Karn Sharma (5 off 4).
Most out-field catches in an IPL game
However, is Rovman Powell the player to take the most catches in an IPL game? Record books say otherwise. Two outfield players have managed to take more catches than the Rajasthan Royals player. Afghan all-rounder Mohammad Nabi took five catches for Sunrisers Hyderabad against his current team Mumbai Indians in 2021 at Abu Dhabi. The ongoing season, also witnessed a player completing five catches, when New Zealand star Daryl Mitchell managed the feat while representing Chennai Super Kings against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Chepauk Stadium.
Sachin Tendulkar, David Warner, Ravindra Jadeja and Faf du Plessis have all taken four catches in the course of an IPL innings, data showed. Rajasthan Royals batter Riyan Parag has also managed as many catches as Powell in a match.
