World number 11 Chou, the 2022 World Championships bronze medallist, took the first set but Sen combined pace with precision and held his nerve to script an epic comeback. 22-year-old Sen, who hails from Uttarakhand's Almora, is a 2021 World Championships bronze medallist and 2022 Commonwealth champion.

Women's singles players PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal are the only Indians to have crossed the quarterfinal stage in the Olympics. In men's singles, Parupalli Kashyap and Kidambi Srikanth had reached the quarterfinals in 2012 London and 2016 Rio editions respectively.

In a conversation with THE WEEK ahead of the Paris Olympics, Lakshya Sen had said he will try to be more aggressive towards the end of games and will concentrate on one match at a time instead of thinking too much ahead.

Lakshya Sen is India's last surviving representative at the Games after the exit of  Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty dup, HS Prannoy and PV Sindhu. Prannoy was beaten by Sen in an all-Indian pre-quarterfinals.
