Best Indian cities for vegans to explore? Actress Sneha Ullal shares her take with THE WEEK

What’s truly wonderful about Indian food is how inherently vegan-friendly it is. By simply omitting the garnish of ghee, cream, or butter, many dishes are naturally vegan without compromising on flavour

As a vegan living in Mumbai, I have witnessed a remarkable growth in vegan options across the city. Both Mumbai and Hyderabad stand out as top destinations for their thriving vegan food scenes and supportive vegan communities.

Mumbai’s diversity and openness to new ideas have made it an ideal hub for veganism. The city offers a wide array of plant-based options, from gourmet dishes to delectable desserts. For instance, vegan versions of popular treats like cakes, ice creams, and chocolates are now readily available, catering to a growing demand.

Hyderabad, on the other hand, is carving its own niche in vegan cuisine. The city combines its rich culinary heritage with innovative plant-based alternatives. Moreover, many south Indian classics, like upma, idli sambar, vada sambar, and dosa, are naturally vegan or can easily be adapted.

What’s truly wonderful about Indian food is how inherently vegan-friendly it is. Many traditional dishes, such as pav bhaji, batata vada, and samosas, can be made without dairy or other animal products. By simply omitting the garnish of ghee, cream, or butter (often added for extra richness), many dishes are naturally vegan without compromising on flavour.

For anyone considering a vegan lifestyle, I highly recommend exploring cities like Mumbai and Hyderabad. Their vibrant food scenes, coupled with a growing awareness of compassionate and sustainable living, make them ideal destinations for vegans and plant-based enthusiasts alike.
