An Ethiopian flight Boeing 737, en route from Addis Ababa to Nairobi, crashed on Sunday morning, Ethiopian Airlines said. The aircraft was carrying 149 passengers along with eight crew members.
“We hereby confirm that our scheduled flight ET 302 from Addis Ababa to Nairobi was involved in accident today,” the airline said in a statement. The airline added that they are yet to confirm the details of the passenger manifest for the flight.
The flight lost contact six minutes after it took off at 8:38 am local time from Bole International Airport. A search and rescue operation is underway. The airline said that they don't have any confirmation on information on survivors.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed offered his condolences to the families of the victims. “The Office of the PM, on behalf of the Government and people of Ethiopia, would like to express it’s (sic) deepest condolences to the families of those that have lost their loved ones on Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 on regular scheduled flight to Nairobi, Kenya this morning,” said a tweet from the official Twitter account of the Office of the Prime Minister of Ethiopia.
