The Pakistan military on Thursday announced it had conducted a successful test of the Ghaznavi ballistic missile.

In a tweet. the Inter Services Public Relations wing of the Pakistan military announced that a “night training launch” of the Ghaznavi missile was conducted. It described the Ghaznavi as being “capable of delivering multiple types of warheads up to 290km”. The press release added that the president of Pakistan and Prime Minister Imran Khan had congratulated the team that tested the missile.

The Ghaznavi missile has been described by experts as being a derivative of the M-11 missile that China exported to Pakistan in the early 1990s. While having shorter range than other Pakistani ballistic missiles, the Ghaznavi can be transported and launched via road-mobile vehicles, making it hard to detect and destroy before launch. The Ghaznavi was introduced into service in 2004. The Ghaznavi, like other Pakistani ballistic missiles, is named after Islamic conqueror Mahmud of Ghazni.

A weapons test from Pakistan was expected after the government on Wednesday issued a notice to airmen (NOTAM) for the airspace around Karachi, where a major missile test facility is located.
