For Trump, impeachment probe is another fundraising opportunity for 2020

Soon after top Democratic leader and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced a formal impeachment probe of US President Donald Trump, his re-election campaign team saw it as an opportunity. They immediately ramped up the fundraising, sending out texts and emails to supporters, requesting them to donate.

One of the emails sent out to supporters read: The Democrats thrive on silencing and intimidating his supporters, like YOU, Friend. They want to take YOUR VOTE away... President Trump wants to know who stood with him when it mattered most.” Voters were called to support Trump's 'impeachment defense team' and contribute to the cause.

Meanwhile, Trump posted a campaign video on Twitter which shows the Democrats having one 'sole focus'—Fighting Trump. The video ends with loud crowd chants that say: 'Four more years'.

This is a characteristic feature of Trump's fundraising strategy where the team sends out such appeals, and capitalise on newsworthy moments. Trump has successfully tapped into online donors and small-dollar donors, who support him and feel that he is being treated unfairly.

In July, the Washington Post reported that money raised for Trump's re-election campaign had already crossed $270 million. In the second quarter itself, the team raised a record-breaking amount from donors—$105 million.
