Protests erupted across Hong Kong on Tuesday as China marked 70 years of Communist rule. According to the South China Morning Post, at least one person was injured after being shot at by the police. The newspaper reported teargas had been fired in Wong Tai Sin, Sha Tin and Tsuen Wan.

As many as 20 subway stations were closed, while shops and malls stopped functioning. Thousands marched through the streets of Hong Kong island on Tuesday afternoon even as police warned protesters to disperse. Smaller protests happened in other districts.

In Tsuen Wan, masked protesters used sticks and umbrellas to assault riot control personnel, who were forced to run for cover.

A harbour-side flag-raising ceremony was witnessed by city officials from the safety of a nearby convention centre. City officials had marked the 22nd anniversary of Hong Kong's handover to Chinese rule in July in a similar manner after popular protests started in June.

After pro-democracy protests started in June to demand the withdrawal of a controversial extradition bill, public anger has spilled over in Hong Kong. The protesters are demanding universal suffrage and amnesty for more than 1,500 people who were arrested during the protests.
