A senior Pakistani journalist has claimed that jailed former prime minister Nawaz Sharif had suffered a heart attack while being treated at the Services Hospital in Lahore. Hamid Mir had tweeted on Saturday that doctors said Sharif had survived the heart attack but was feeling weak.

Gul Bukhari, a Pakistani journalist who has been critical of the military, tweeted "Sharif has been put on oxygen & ventilator is on standby." Pakistan's Daily Times reported Sharif had been "complaining of severe pain in his chest" all night on Friday.

Sharif, who has been in prison since last year since being convicted of corruption, was rushed to hospital earlier this week after his blood platelet count dropped to critically low levels.

Dunya News, a Pakistani news outlet, claimed his platelets' level was fluctuating. According to Dunya News, Sharif has been suffering "diabetes, stress, kidney complications, heart disease, cholesterol, joint pain and thrombocytopenia. He had already undergone a heart surgery and coronary stent procedures”.

Dunya News claimed a medical panel examining Sharif could decide to recommend treatment abroad if his platelets levels improve to 50,000 and he doesn't have heart complications.

On Friday, a court had granted Sharif bail on health grounds in the Chaudhry Sugar Mills case. Sharif and his relatives had been accused of money laundering in the sale and purchase of the mills' shares. He had been arrested on October 11 in the case.
