China confirms progress in disengagement at Ladakh; Doval involved in talks

The Chinese foreign ministry on Monday confirmed that India and China had made progress towards to disengagement in eastern Ladakh. The Indian Army on Monday morning indicated that China had pulled back troops about 2km from Galwan and Gogra-Hot Springs area, nearly three weeks after a clash at Galwan left 15 Indian troops dead and 76 injured.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian was quoted by Reuters as saying both sides were "taking effective measures to disengage and ease the situation on the border". “We hope India will meet China halfway and take concrete measures to carry out what both sides agreed to, continue to closely communicate through diplomatic and military channels and work together to cool down the situation at the border," Zhao said.

China's People's Liberation Army was seen removing tents and structures at patrolling point 14. Rearward movement of vehicles of Chinese troops was seen in the general area of Galwan and Gogra-Hot Springs.

Meanwhile, news agency ANI has reported National Security Adviser Ajit Doval held talks with Chinese Foreign Minister and State Councillor Wang Yi via videoconference on Sunday. ANI reported, "The focus of the conversation between NSA Ajit Doval & Chinese FM Wang Yi was the full and enduring restoration of peace and tranquillity and to work together to avoid such incidents [Galwan clash] in future.”
