Rising Republican star Madison Cawthorn will soon be the youngest member of the Congress. 25-year-old Cawthorn defeated Democrat Moe Davis, a 62-year-old retired Air Force colonel and former prosecutor at Guantánamo Bay, in North Carolina’s 11th Congressional District.

Currently, Democrat representative of New York, 31-year-old Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, is the youngest Congresswoman, while the youngest senator is 40-year-old Missouri Republican Josh Hawley. Overall, the current Congress is among the oldest ever.

As a response to his win, Cawthorn tweeted, “Cry more, lib.” Cawthorn defeated Lynda Bennett, who had an endorsement from President Trump at the primaries.

He was then given a primetime speaking slot at the August Republican National Convention, spoke about the adversities he had overcome in recovering from a car crash that left him partially paralysed, stood up from his wheelchair with the assistance of two aides. Cawthorn, however, has been forced to repeatedly deny that he is racist after his ties to the far-right came under scrutiny in recent months.

“The days of AOC and the far left misleading the next generation of Americans are numbered,” Cawthorn said. He had earlier indicated that it was, in fact, Ocasio-Cortez’s rise that had inspired him to run. Cawthorn is anti-abortion and pro-border walls.
