According to the Robert Koch Institute, Germany reported 92,378 new cases of the coronavirus on Monday and 19 new deaths. Germany saw a spike in coronavirus cases at 2,330 per million as of March 12 from 1,570 per million on March 2. with the Netherlands seeing a spike in cases per million at 3,955 as of March 12 from 1,956 on February 27, it seems as though a new wave of the coronavirus might have begun in Europe.
According to the Office for National Statistics, 1 in 25 people in the UK is infected. In Scotland, 1 in 13 people is positive-- same as Northern Ireland. In Wales, 1 in 30 are infected. Ogbonnaya Omenka, an assistant professor and director of diversity at the Butler University College of Pharmacy and Health Science told USA today, "Because it is an infectious disease, unless we eradicate it, there is bound to be that possibility of its return ... As the virus variants have shown, even the possible return is not predictable in terms of its severity or degree of similarity to the previous forms,"
A lot of these cases have been caused due to the BA.2 version of the Omicron variant. The scare of a new wave comes as European states gear up to lift Covid-19-related restrictions, including welcome travellers. The BA.2 version of the Omicron variant is known to be 30 per cent more transmissible than the Omicron variant. Scientists say new variants of the virus will keep emerging.
