Singapore Finance Minister Lawrence Wong has been chosen to succeed Lee Hsien Loong as prime minister. Wong would be the country's fourth prime minister since it gained independence in 1965. There was overwhelming support among the cabinet ministers for Wong.

70-year-old Lee said that adjustments to cabinet positions will be made in due course of time, a Bloomberg report read. “I have every confidence that Lawrence and his team will continue to give their best for Singapore and Singaporeans,” Lee said.

Singapore politics faced a year of uncertainty since Deputy PM Heng Swee Keat stepped down in April 2021 for personal reasons. The People's Action Party has held power in Singapore for about six decades. Questions about Heng emerged when, despite winning the 2020 election with 89 per cent of seats, the party saw its worst parliamentary performance.

PM Lee announced a leadership shake-up with the intention of finding a successor before an election in 2025.
