Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said on Monday that the killing of a Revolutionary Guards colonel, who was shot dead in Tehran will be avenged.
Iran blamed “elements linked to the global arrogance” for the killing of IRGC Colonel Hassan Sayad Khodayari, who was killed on Sunday outside his home by assailants on motorcycles.
“I insist on the serious pursuit (of the killers) by security officials, and I have no doubt that the blood of this great martyr will be avenged.” “There is no doubt that the hand of global arrogance can be seen in this crime,” Raisi said, the Guardian reported.
Khodayari's killing was the most high-profile killing since the murder of nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh in November 2020. In January 2020, IRGC's head Qassem Soleimani was assassinated by the US via a drone attack.
The IRGC described Khodayari as a 'defender of the sanctuary.' it is the term used for those who work on behalf of Iran in Syria or Iraq. Iran has significant political influence over both countries.
