Prince Charles, on Saturday, was proclaimed King Charles. As he begins his reign, he will need all the support he can get not just from his family, but from his staff as well. There is one person who plays an important role in ensuring things run smoothly for Charles-- his private secretary Clive Alderton.

Who is Clive Alderton, King Charles' man Friday? Educated at Abingdon School, Alderton started his career in 1986, joining the Foreign Office. Over the years, the 55-year-old has held numerous posts outside the UK including Poland, Belgium, the European Union, Singapore and France. He was appointed deputy private secretary to the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall in 2006.

In 2009, he was promoted to the rank of Private Secretary for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs to their Royal Highnesses. In 2012, he was also appointed ambassador to Morocco and Mauritania. In 2015, Alderton was promoted to Principal Private Secretary to the royal couple. Alderton is also a Trustee of the Prince of Wales Charitable Fund.

In 2022, Alderton was made Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order.
