Oleato, anyone? The world's largest coffee chain Starbucks has said it will launch a line of olive oil-infused drinks. “Olive oil's "unexpected, velvety, buttery flavour... enhanced the coffee and lingers beautifully on the palate,” Chief executive Howard Schultz told BBC.
The major chain is among other US businesses that have faced obstacles while expanding their business into the Italian food and drinks market. Italy is famed for its independent, family-run cafes. Starbucks has around 20 stores across the country.
"Now, there's going to be people who say, olive oil in coffee? But the proof is in the cup," Schultz said. "In over 40 years, I can't remember a moment in time where I've been more excited, more enthused," he added. The Oleato range will be launched on Wednesday. The range will feature an espresso stirred with ice and a latte with olive oil "steamed with oat milk". Olive oil is a key feature of Italian cuisine.
The Italian market isn't the only one the chain is trying to woo. The firm will introduce new ice-based and hot drinks in Southern California in the US this spring. New drinks will also be introduced in the UK, Middle East and Japan later this year.
