Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reached Moldova to be part of the European Political Community summit. At the event, where 50 European leaders gathered, Zelenskyy pressed his case for Ukraine to be part of the NATO military alliance. Zelenskyy met Moldovan President Maia Sandu and reiterated the need for Western fighter planes. He also said that his government was preparing a future meeting to discuss Ukrainian peace proposals, Reuters.
"We support Moldova and its people who are integrating into the EU," said Zelenskyy. "You supported our people, our refugees who fled in the first days of the war, and we will never forget it. Our future is in the EU. Ukraine is ready to join NATO," he added.
The meeting of the European Political Community, a pan-continental gathering of heads of state and government from 47 countries, brings together leaders from European Union nations and others to the 27-member bloc's south and east a region pushed to a turning point in its relationship with Moscow by Russia's invasion of Ukraine last year, an AP report reads.
He also expressed Ukraine’s desire to join the European Union. The summit is intended to show support to Ukraine and Moldova. Ukraine is gearing up to launch its counter-offensive against Russia. Ever since Russia began the invasion of Ukraine, debris from missile attacks has been falling over Moldova.
According to the head of Russia's FSB security service, the West was pushing Moldova to participate in the Ukraine conflict. "The presence of these leaders in our country is a clear message that Moldova is not alone and neither is our neighbour Ukraine, which for a year and three months has been standing against the barbaric invasion of Russia," Sandu told Reuters.
The summit will focus on issues like energy, cybersecurity and migration. The summit will also address friction between other European nations-- Azerbaijan and Armenia, whose leaders will hold talks with French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and EU officials.
