An American nurse and her child have been kidnapped in Haiti, a Christian charity she works for said. Alix Dorsainvil is working for El Roi Haiti in a community ministry near Port-au-Prince when she and her child were taken, BBC reported.
The US State Department said it is aware of the kidnapping and is in touch with Haitian authorities "and will continue to work with them and our U.S. government interagency partners."
Dorsainvil is married to the founder and director of El Roi Haiti, Sandro Dorsainvil. "Alix is a deeply compassionate and loving person who considers Haiti her home and the Haitian people her friends and family," the statement from El Roi Haiti added, BBC reported.
The US, on July 27, issued a level-four "do not travel" advisory for Haiti stating kidnapping, crime, civil unrest, and 'poor health care infrastructure' on the island.
Haiti has been in a political crisis since the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in 2021. Over 165,00 people have been forced to abandon their homes due to Gangs having taken over a vast majority of Port au Prince's street geography, making crime and chaos rampant, the United Nations reported last month. Kenya had offered 1,000 police officers to help train local law enforcement.
Originally a nurse from New Hampshire, Dorsainvil moved to Haiti after her husband invited her to a Haitian school to provide nursing care for children.
